ARCADY (Assessment of Roundabout Capacity and Delay) has been developed over the last 30 years by TRL and is used for predicting capacities, queues, delays (both queueing and geometric) and accident risk at roundabouts. ARCADY is an easy-to-use and helpful tool to aid the busy traffic engineer in designing new roundabouts as well as assessing the effects of modifying existing designs.
At its core, ARCADY uses the well-established TRL/Kimber capacity relationships, which take into account key roundabout geometries such as entry width, flare length and inscribed circle diameter. This empirical framework intrinsically links roundabout geometry to driver behaviour and in turn to predicted capacities, queues and delays.
ARCADY has been successfully used to design and re-design thousands of roundabouts throughout the world. It has a host of satisfied customers including governments, multi-national organisations and universities. Its easy to use and intuitive user interface mean that it can also be used effectively by small consultancy companies. It can model both drive-on-the-left and drive-on-the-right roundabout systems, making it applicable to junctions in many countries. Level of Service and Peak Hour Factor outputs are available.
ARCADY's capacity, delay and accident prediction calculations can be applied to single or linked roundabouts with up to 20 arms (legs) on each roundabout, allowing even the busiest and most complex junctions to be modelled. At-grade, grade-separated and mini roundabouts can be modelled, and various types of pedestrian crossings (Zebra, Pelican, Puffin) can be analysed.
The user has a choice of methods of entering traffic flows and the program can estimate the shape of the peak, if necessary, according to the amount of data available. The modelled time period is split into smaller time-segments, typically 15 minutes long, with detailed results generated for each time-segment.
ARCADY calculates and reports the slope and intercept of each roundabout entry. These are based on the Kimber equations but can be modified depending on the roundabout type and other factors such as lighting, road surface and the effect of pedestrian crossings. The user has full control over the slope and intercept values and, if required, can adjust them either directly or by applying various adjustment factors.
ARCADY contains a number of analysis options that make it easy to try out 'what-if' scenarios and to compare alternative geometries. A small change in entry width or flare length may often have a large effect on roundabout capacity, and these effects can be studied effortlessly by using ARCADY's graph generators, comparison tools, marginal analysis tools or simply by observing in real-time how the results vary when an input is adjusted.
ARCADY 7 Introduces a number of new features and modelling improvements.
Brand new User Interface
The ARCADY user interface has been completely rewritten to use a similar style as TRANSYT 13 and OSCADY PRO. The new GUI provides window and file management tools, data grids, undo/redo, task lists and many more. Data can be entered in any order and easily changed at any time using a variety of data input tools.
Scenarios, Analysis Sets and Demand Sets
ARCADY 7 allows the entry of multiple geometries and flows for different time periods and years in the same file. A summary results screen shows instant results for all scenarios and allows the user to immediately compare roundabout performance across ALL scenarios.
Model linked roundabouts
ARCADY 7 can model systems of linked roundabouts, making it possible for the first time to model double roundabouts and other more complex systems. Blocking of internal links between roundabouts is modelled, along with the consequent transfer of queues to entry arms.
Interactive Junction Diagram
Roundabouts can be viewed, edited and manipulated graphically. Turning counts, flows and other data can be shown graphically for each arm, along with queues, flares and pedestrian crossings. Various overlay modes are available, including depiction of the relative proportions of entry, exit and circulating traffic, colour-coded by origin or destination.
Choice of units for all data input and output
Choose between vehicles or PCU, per hour, minute or time-segment. Various units are also available for delays, distances and speeds. The ability to change units at any time offers maximum flexibility in data entry and reporting.
Performance Analysis
ARCADY 7 includes powerful analysis modes to generate graphs and charts of almost any data. An optimiser mode finds the best set of parameters to meet any required target performance. Other tools provide easy ways to quantify variation in performance due to uncertainty in measurements and to determine the additional traffic demand that roundabouts can cope with.
New modelling features
A number of new modelling features have been added, including the ability to model entry and exit restrictions, a Puffin crossing model, minimum/maximum capacity functions, Peak Hour Factor traffic flows. Slope and intercept values can be entered directly and more options for flow and capacity scaling are now available. Each arm can use a different traffic profile type and new outputs have been added, including random queues and calculated entry, exit and circulating flows for each arm.
New reporting modes
Customisable reports contain all input and output information, including custom data grids. Reports can be viewed using the built-in HTML viewer and can be exported as Word or PDF documents. A powerful Comparison Tool makes it easy to generate reports showing the differences between two or more files.
Other new features
A Glossary Screen is available at all times, showing detailed information about the currently selected data item. Most screens allow data to be easily transferred to and from other applications, making it easy to quickly transfer traffic flows to/from spreadsheets. ARCADY 7 includes many more.
ARCADY 7 is compatible with all previous versions. This allows data files created with older versions of ARCADY to be incorporated and analysed by the new program.
ARCADY 7 works on Windows XP, VISTA and Windows 7.
